On a scale of 1-10, what did you think of the actors’ portrayals of the characters?
Average rating:7
- Flo: I read The Duff so so long ago. I know there were differences, but I understand why the differences were made. This movie was different from the book, but it was still cute and I enjoyed looking at Robbie Amell. 🙂
- Leslie: 9 – I absolutely loved this cast. Mae Whitman plays Bianca so well.
- Ellie: 5 – I mean they weren’t the characters in the book, but I still loved the characters!
On a scale of 1-10, how do you rate the movie’s likeness/faithfulness to the book?
Average rating: 4
- Leslie: 5 – The spirit of the book remained true, but the plot was very different from the book.
- Ellie: 3 – Again, very different from the book, but I still really enjoyed both! I just enjoyed then in different ways and for different reasons.
What scene in the book did you wish was in the movie, if any?
- Ellie: Not a scene, but a plot point… the deep emotional bit of Wesley that he lets out. Also, that scene at the end where he’s just staring at her across the room and doesn’t care who noticed. Though that wouldn’t work with the way the movie played out.
What did you like about the movie that was different from the book?
- Leslie: I liked Bianca and Wesley’s relationship better in the movie. In the book they are more sexual. Bianca uses Wesley as an escape from her problems. The movie took on a different take where they are both helping each other out and develop feeling along the way.
- Ellie: It was lighter and more kid-friendly, which fits the screen. Again, I loved both the book and movie, but in very different ways.
What were your favorite scenes in the movie?
- Leslie: I thought the scene when Bianca goes on a date with Toby was pretty funny. I also enjoyed the Homecoming scene at the end of the movie.
- Ellie: Bianca keeps seeing Wesley when she’s on her date, that mall scene (even though it goes against the whole idea that she doesn’t have to change in the book)
