Like you, we here at The Fandom are crazy about The Mortal Instruments Series! We’ve watched the movie dozens of times. Our books are worn out from being re-read and shared with friends. Building up to the release of City of Heavenly Fire, The Fandom will be sharing our top 5 scenes from each book every day, starting today with City of Bones and ending Friday with City of Lost Souls.
Keep in mind, these are just my personal 5 favorite scenes from the book City Of Bones. I considered everyone’s favorites (Garden Scene) and also could highlight just Simon Lewis scenes easily. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the movie but I loved the book even more.
#1. The Ravener- This early chapter of the book made my list simply because Clary kills the ravener. No training or experience in destroying demons needed. No damsel in distress, Clary Fray sends the monster packing…girl power.
“With a scream she hit out at the thing, wanting to smash it, to blind it. She had almost forgotten about the Sensor. As the creature lunged for her face, jaws wide, she jammed the Sensor between its teeth and felt hot, acidic drool coat her wrist and spill in burning drops onto the bare skin of her face and throat.”
#2. Demon Hunting and Fashion – Isabelle’s makeover of Clary, and the boys reactions to her new look. Clary admits to herself that the short black dress, fishnets and boots are badass. Simon glancing past Isabelle to stare at Clary. Then there is Jace…
“She slid the dagger into the outside pocket on her backpack. She looked up from closing it to find Jace watching her through hooded eyes. “And one last thing,” he said. He reached over and pulled the sparkling pins out of her hair, so that it fell in warm and heavy curls down her neck. The sensation of hair tickling her bare skin was unfamiliar and oddly pleasant. “Much better,” he said, and she thought this time that maybe his voice was slightly uneven too.”
#3. Dead Man’s Party – Magnus and Alec meet for the first time, and Cassie Clare describes the interactions so vividly. Clary hears Alec laugh for the first time, at Magnus’ jokes of course. This is one of my favorite couples in the series, and even though they aren’t quite a couple yet in this book, their interaction was memorable.
“I’d say it was a pleasure to meet you, but it wasn’t. Not that you aren’t all fairly charming, and as for you-” He dropped a glittery wink at Alec, who looked astounded. “Call me?”
#4. We were just kissing – Heartbreaking, gut-wrenching. Not all my favorite moments are happy ones. When Simon runs into Clary and Jace kissing outside her room, she had forgotten completely about Simon. Clary has her first fight with her best friend, and then there was Simon’s confession…
“I’ve been in love with you for ten years, so I thought it seemed like time to find out whether you felt the same about me. Which I guess you don’t.”
#5. The Mortal Cup – In the book Clary runs her fingers over wings drawn in her sketchbook, and instead of paper she felt soft feathers. By instinct she drew runes into her sketchbook that brought images to life. A glimpse at a great power inside a great Shadowhunter.
“Jace,” she said. “Give me your stele.” He pressed it, warm and alive-feeling into her palm. She turned the card over and traced over the runes painted on its back-a twist here and a line there and they meant something entirely different. When she turned the card back over, the picture had subtly changed: The fingers had released their grip on the Cup’s stem, and the hand seemed almost to be offering the Cup to her as if to say, Here, take it.”
