Animator Aaron Blaise shows us the making of a scene from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Animator shows the audience a short scene from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!

Aaron Blaise has been an animator for over 25 years, learning the technicalities of animating and drawing for popular well-known films. Below Blaise shows us a shot of a scene from Beauty and the Beast. The shot from this movie will be when the Beast is leading Belle down the hall of his castle and showing her around. In this shot, the beast drawls out the lines, “You can go anywhere you like except the west wing.”

Blaise begins by introducing drawing and stating the immense response from his previous videos. He states that he is not going to draw but will take us through history of a shot from Beauty and the Beast.

Blaise goes into detail explaining the inner workings of Disney. He explicates the process of keeping past drawings. He states that after each movie his team and him get to keep some of the shots.

Though the shot shown in this clip is a small sliver of the entire movie, it took time and a lot of paper. Blaise even claims that the shot had to be done with red and there was no chance to add graphite. Each turn and movement had to be drawn separately.

Blaise gives us some insight on the movements he implemented. He flips through the sheets of paper showing the audience the subtle walking movement which was done when he slowly began to cut pieces of paper away from each drawing and began adding peg strips to time the acting and walking to be concurrent. This showed the bouncy movements of the beast. Blaise also explains the movement of the beast hand and the turning of his head, stating that he had key drawings which he used as a model.

This video shows the time and hard work hand animation takes. The shot of the scene is slow and deliberately planned out so that each movement matches the acting and speaking sections. Blaise ends the video stating that the advancement of animation toward online is amazing, but “some day we will see [this style] again.”
