Algee Smith Joins THE HATE U GIVE In Central Role

Algee Smith will play Starr’s childhood friend whose experience changes her perspective on society.

The Hate U Give has tapped Detroit actor Algee Smith in an important role that serves as a catalyst for the events of the film.

A fictional novel based on current societal tensions and the Black Lives Matter movement,The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a 16-year-old who witnesses an unarmed friend fatally shot by police and must find the best way to speak out about the incident while living two separate lives: One at her poor but supportive neighborhood, one at her less understanding suburban prep school.

According to THR, Smith will play Khalil, Starr’s friend killed by a police officer during a traffic stop after the officer mistakes a hairbrush in the car for a gun.

Alongside Algee Smith and star Amandla Stenberg, the film has also cast Starr’s family: Regina Hall as her mother Lisa, Russell Hornsby as her father Maverick aka “Big Mav,” and Lamar Johnson as older brother Seven.

The film is in pre-production and does not have a release date quite yet. However, you can pick up the Angie Thomas novel, which has been #1 on the New York Times Bestsellers list for 16 weeks and has spent 24 weeks on the list in total, via Amazon.
