For reasons unknown, Dawson has exited the series and Braga has stepped into her shoes on NEW MUTANTS.
Alice Braga, the star of USA’s Queen of the South, will now be playing Dr. Cecilia Reyes in X-Men spinoff New Mutants. Rosario Dawson was originally set to play the role, but has now departed the project; the reason for her departure is unclear. Braga, a Brazilian native, has appeared in movies such as I Am Legend, Predators, and Elysium. Queen of the South is currently in its second season.
New Mutants will be directed by Josh Boone, who also co-wrote the script with Knate Lee. The premise for the show is drawn heavily from the 1980s comic book works by Chris Claremont, Bob McLeod, and Bill Sienkiewicz, and will tell of five diverse teens who must escape a secret facility where they are being held against their will. Braga’s character, Dr. Reyes, is a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself – but there appears to be an air of mystery around her, as she has more going on than she initially reveals.
Other stars on New Mutants include Anya Taylor-Joy, known for The Witch and Split; Maisie Williams, famous for playing Arya in Game of Thrones; Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things; 13 Reasons Why actor Henry Zaga; and relative newcomer Blu Hunt. The studio plans to take a horror-thriller approach to the spinoff, taking its X-Men style and infusing it with flavors similar to Deadpool and Logan.
New Mutants is set to begin filming in Boston in July and release on April 13, 2018.
