AMC Announces Feature Length THE WALKING DEAD Movies

Feature-length films with familiar faces will be the next phase of THE WALKING DEAD universe!

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for the Sunday, November 4th episode of The Walking Dead, “What Comes After.”

Rick Grimes may no longer be a part of The Walking Dead TV show, but he’s not gone for good.

After a dramatic departure episode that leaves most of The Walking Dead characters thinking Rick Grimes is dead and gone, AMC has announced that Andrew Lincoln will star in “multiple” feature-length movies as the beloved character.

Serving as another major expansion of the universe, the films will be written by The Walking Dead‘s somewhat polarizing chief content officer Scott Gimple. The first is due to start filming as early as next year, according to Variety.

“These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features,” said Gimple. “We’re starting with the first part of the continuing story of Rick Grimes, and there is much more on the way, featuring yet-unseen worlds of The Walking Dead and faces from the show’s past, as well as new characters we hope to become favorites, told by TWD veterans and emerging voices. We want to break new ground with different, distinct stories, all part of the same world that’s captured our imagination for nearly a decade of the Dead.”

For his part, Andrew Lincoln hasn’t released any statements about his new role within the universe, but feature-length projects will certainly require a lot less from him on average– a few weeks versus several months of filming for each season.

The Walking Dead will march on Sundays on AMC in the meantime.
