Check out the cast on the set of THE HATE U GIVE!
The Hate U Give is rounding out its cast as production begins in Atlanta, Georgia!
Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, the Captain America films) and Kian Lawley (Before I Fall) have joined the film, based on the popular YA novel from Angie Thomas inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, in two important supporting roles.
The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a 16-year-old who witnesses an unarmed friend named Khalil (Algee Smith) fatally shot by police and must find the best way to speak out about the incident while living two separate lives: One at her poor but supportive neighborhood, one at her less understanding suburban prep school.
Mackie will play King, a local gang leader and former friend of Starr’s father, Big Mav (Russell Hornsby.) He also happens to be the stepfather to Starr’s older half-brother, Seven (Lamar Johnson,) which means King and the Carters are precariously intertwined.
Lawley will play Starr’s prep school boyfriend, Chris, who knows a bit more of her real self than most of her classmates. However, Starr still hides some parts of herself from Chris out of fear that he’ll never fully understand her thanks to his white suburban upbringing.
Recently, author Angie Thomas took a trip down the the movie set and shared some photos of Starr and the other stars in action:
