AQUAMAN has casts a major comic villain!

The upcoming Aquaman solo film is ready for an undersea rumble with even more opposition for Arthur Curry joining the fray. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who made his mark in Baz Luhrmann‘s The Get Down, will join the film as Black Manta.

Black Manta has a few different backstories in various comic runs but in each, he’s the subject of horrible experiments that give him enhanced strength. Though he’s a clever tech genius, he’s also obsessed with Aquaman and will play a major role in the rift between men and Atlanteans. He’ll likely work closely with Aquaman’s half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson,) who’s looking to stir up some trouble among the undersea royalty.

Variety reports that Abdul-Mateen beat out a number of actors, including Moonlight‘s Trevante Rhodes and 24: Legacy‘s Corey Hawkins for the role.

Aquaman is due out on October 5, 2018.
