When it was first announced that Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch would play major roles in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, many fans assumed they’d be working with The Avengers. It turns out they’ll be taking a much darker turn!

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch (portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen) will be on Ultron’s side of the battle!

By the time of AGE OF ULTRON, the twins have led a solitary, nomadic life before being captured by Hydra. Now, they’re finally able to act on their massive grudge against The Avengers.

Here’s what director Joss Whedon had to say on the characters and their unique roles in the story:

“I’m interested because there’s familial issues with that kind of resentment. You can sort of go deeper and I can play with their relationships and I can play with attitudes. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver hate them with a fiery hate…”

“With the [first] Avengers, everybody pretty much had the power of being able to punch somebody. And now we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot [Ultron] who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it’s a darker, weirder, tougher world that they’re living in.”
