At 11 a.m. sharp tomorrow, “The Hobbit” fans from all over the world are invited to raise a buttered scone to Bilbo Baggins.

Bilbo and Frodo are hobbits in the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien classic, “The Lord of the Rings,” and they share a birthday on Saturday, Sept. 22. But tomorrow, Sept. 21, 2012, also marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of “The Hobbit,” the prelude to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy that introduces readers to Bilbo, Gollum and the ring. In the past 75 years, more than 100 million copies of “The Hobbit” have been sold world-wide.

To celebrate, publisher HarperCollins UK is organizing “The Hobbit Second Breakfast,” encouraging fans everywhere to eat a second breakfast at 11 a.m., “inspired by the ideals cherished by hobbits everywhere: camaraderie, companionship and, of course, a love of good food.”

After all, hobbits may be small, but they sure can eat. They take seven meals daily: breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper. (Bilbo particularly loves his second breakfast.)

HarperCollins UK has provided a second breakfast shopping list on its website, with suggestions of mince pies, crusty bloomers (English loaves of bread), brown sauce, sausages, eggs and more. There’s also a handy recipe for seed cake and cutouts for decorative Hobbit flags and a second breakfast teacup coaster.

The publisher will recreate a hobbit second breakfast on Fulham Palace gardens in London on Sept. 22, the Baggins’ birthday, transform the grounds into a Shire (the magical home of the Hobbits) and stage a reading from the book.

For more inspiration on creating your own second breakfast for tomorrow, you can peek at the menu for The Shires Rest Café on the grounds of the New Zealand Hobbiton movie set where director Peter Jackson filmed the coming movies, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” The breakfast offerings include super sized thick toast and mini fruit kebabs.
