Check out the cover for Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera’s queer New York City rom-com WHAT IF IT’S US!
Last October, authors Becky Albertalli (Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda) and Adam Silvera (They Both Die At The End) announced a team-up in the works since 2014. Their collaborative new novel What If It’s Us follows Arthur and Ben, two young gay men in New York City who go through a series of “missed connections” through which they develop a unique romance.
EW has the first look at the novel’s bright, gorgeous cover, designed by Erin Fitzsimmons and Alison Donalty, and illustrated by Jeff Östberg. Take a look!
Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera also chatted with EW about the novel, including what fans can expect from the ending.
“A lot of people are looking at as, ‘Are we going to have a Becky ending or an Adam ending?'” said Albertalli. “I think when people read it, this is very much an ‘Adam and Becky’ book. It’s one thing, and I wouldn’t say it skews one way or the other.”
They also talked about the beauty of two boys checking each other out on the cover.
“When I was a queer teenager, I didn’t have the confidence or bravery to read about other queer people,” said Silvera. “I think we have to move with the times here. And that’s one of the beautiful things about the cover … All my novels are about queer boys, and this is the first time that I have a cover that has two instantly recognizably gay boys on it. It’s clearly a rom-com, and for me it feels like another coming-out.”
