Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts Join OPHELIA, Based On Young Adult HAMLET Re-Imagining

Two stars join an unconventional retelling of the classic HAMLET story, OPHELIA!

One of the biggest new stars in the galaxy is taking on another huge role of an even more classic nature!

Daisy Ridley from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its upcoming sequels has signed on to play the title character in Ophelia, an adaptation of author Lisa Klein’s young adult Hamlet re-imagining of the same name.

The story comes from the prospective of Ophelia, who is in love with Prince Hamlet but the daughter of his enemy chief advisor. The tale features some major twists to the tragic tale that give the interesting young girl more depth and more credit than she received in the original Shakespearean story.

In further casting news, the project has also attracted Naomi Watts (The Divergent Series). She’s set to play Hamlet’s mother and queen of Denmark, Gertrude.

“Whether it’s for the legions of fans of romantic tragic characters, or the millions of visitors who annually seek out the classic Millais painting of Ophelia at London’s Tate Gallery, Ophelia holds a special place in the heart of the cultural canon — so we couldn’t be more thrilled to have the talented female team of Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, and [Director] Claire McCarthy set to make a film with our friends at Covert Media that’ll finally shed light on a character who’s fascinated so many for so long,” Producer Daniel Bobker told THR in the casting announcement.

The film does not yet have a release date.
