BREAKING BAD creator Vince Gilligan is teaming up with Disney for a new take on JACK AND THE BEANSTALK!
There’s no doubt that Vince Gilligan is a talented writer and producer, but his tastes tend to veer a little darker than your average fairly tale. He’s the creator behind meth lab action-drama BREAKING BAD and its predecessor BETTER CALL SAUL, so it’s a bit surprising to see him teaming up with Disney for JACK AND THE BEANSTALK!
Like most of Disney’s upcoming films, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK will be a live-action take on the classic tale. Gilligan has tapped his co-executive producer on his hit AMC shows, Thomas Schnauz, to pen the script.
With murderous giants and betrayals all around, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK has the potential to be significantly darker than some other Disney projects, so we’re interested to see what direction Gilligan will take the story.
There have been plenty of films featuring Jack’s story. Stephen Sondheim’s version of Jack was part of Disney’s INTO THE WOODS ensemble in late 2014. But JACK THE GIANT SLAYER, which featured the character’s individual tale, didn’t fare well at the box office in 2013. Disney’s last take on the tale was MICKEY AND THE BEANSTALK, an animated feature from 1947.
