Disney Has Found Its Live-Action Aladdin and Jasmine

Casting for ALADDIN was announced at D23 on Saturday; the only other known cast member is Will Smith as the Genie.

The live-action Aladdin will be relative newcomer Mena Massoud, while Power Rangers star Naomi Scott is set to play Jasmine. The casting for Aladdin and Jasmine went on for months; casting directors were stationed in multiple countries, and over 2,000 actors were tested for the roles. There was interest in names like Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed, but in the end, Disney decided on an unknown actor for the movie musical’s title character.

Massoud is an Eygptian-Canadian actor and has been part of the cast of Amazon’s Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski. He has previously appeared in the TeenNick series Open Heart. Scott is a British actress and singer whose mother is from northern India. In addition to Power Rangers, she has appeared in the film The 33 and the Fox series Terra Nova.

The director for the live-action Aladdin is Guy Ritchie. Dan Lin is producing the film via his Lin Pictures banner alongside executive producer Jonathon Elrich. Lin has previously worked with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes. Consultants for the long-awaited Aladdin revival include producer Marc Platt (from the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns) and Chris Montan (executive music producer for Pocahontas and Frozen). Aladdin will begin shooting in August in London. Roles still to be cast include the villain Jafar, Jasmine’s father the Sultan, and Jafar’s feathered sidekick Iago.

Aladdin will be the latest installment in Disney’s recent trend of live-action adaptations of classic animations, including films like Alice in Wonderland (2010), Cinderella (2015), The Jungle Book (2016), and, of course, the wildly popular The Beauty and the Beast (2017). Upcoming films include Mulan and The Lion King.
