Disney has Found its MULAN in Chinese Actress Liu Yifei

After a worldwide search, Disney has cast the title role of their live-action remake of Mulan. Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu has landed the lead role of Hua Mulan, the young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army conscription in fifth-century China.

The movie’s casting directors searched five continents and saw close to 1,000 actresses for the role looking for someone ethnically Chinese who has martial arts skills and the ability to speak English. Liu fit the bill. She is one of China’s most popular actresses with a series of TV dramas in the mid-2000s. Her film credits include The Forbidden Kingdom, Outcast, and The Chinese Widow.

Mulan is directed by Niki Caro, produced by Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner, and is set for a 2019 release.
