Dominic Sherwood reads with Clary candidates for Shadowhunters

McG is in the process of looking for the one who will play Clary Fray in the TV series based off Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments, Shadowhunters.  And apparently, today was the day for that as he recently tweeted an image of him with Dominic Sherwood, who’s already signed on to play Jace, the hot and awesome and all-too-cocky young warrior who introduces Clary to the world of the Shadowhunters.  In the tweet, he reveals that the actor has been already doing his part reading with Clary candidates for the show.

Although it could be the lighting, but it looks that the naturally dark-haired actor would look just fine with lighter-colored hair.

Regarding the idea of Sherwood (and his hair) being cast in the role that was played by naturally blond Jamie Campbell Bower in the movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, this what Cassie had to say in recent Tumblr post:

Achinglove said: I really like Dom, he’s a great actor. But Cassie, please, tell me they’ll dye his hair blonde.

I’ve no idea. I’d ask McG, really, he might know, he’s the executive producer.  I don’t know about contacts either, and I won’t be the person making that decision.

For what it’s worth, I agree that dying his hair blond is the right idea. (I don’t actually agree about the contacts. I think they affect people’s acting and look weird. I think it has never mattered that Ian Somerhalder, on the Vampire Diaries, has blue eyes instead of black, or that Daniel Radcliffe didn’t have green eyes.) But I think that hair dye is such a small gesture toward faithfulness to source material that unless there’s a pressing reason not to do it, it ought to be done. I think it’s very hard to win over a fanbase if you don’t seem like you’re willing to go even that far. And Dominic is already blondish.

The film was perfect  what influenced me to buy your books (besides the story) was the actors jamie campbell and Lily. When I heard about the series I’d be more than happy, because I would be able to see jamie and lily and also be able to enter the world of shadows. But I heard recently that Jace will not be played by Jamie campell, then as a big fan and your target audience I ask you to continue with the film’s cast. Jamie campbell bower has to be Jace and Lily have to be Clary! This is a sincere request.

I believe you that you are sincere! And while I understand that you only heard this recently, it’s been public knowledge pretty much since they announced the TV show. People are reacting to it now because the casting of the TV show is actually happening.

This is not a recast. A recast would be if they were continuing the movies, but had decided to cast all new actors in the parts for City of Ashes. As far as everyone involved in making the film and the TV show are concerned, studio, network, production, everyone, the film and the show are two completely different franchises. They are different stories, the characters are characterized differently, they are being made by different people. They are going to look different and sound different. And as far as the people making this (who are not me) are concerned, asking them to cast the movie cast makes as much sense as asking them to cast the cast of Snowpiercer. It is just how this stuff works.

Casting is complicated. It is a mix of director’s visions and studio/network visions and availability and scheduling. If you think someone is the perfect and only person for a part, okay, but you do have to keep in mind that no one involved in making this thing is going to be moved by that. They spend too much time being involved in the practical realities of the business. If there was really only one actor for any part, ever, then movies and TV shows would stop being made: there would never be a big enough chance that the actor you hire is the Only Right One to make it worth it.

And I really hate having to be the one to explain this, because it makes it sound like this has something to do with me. It doesn’t. I have nothing to do with any of these decisions. I just have a background in entertainment business, is all. Look, you can not watch the TV show because you like the film cast, that’s your right, but it’s not a gesture of loyalty toward them any more than it’s a gesture of loyalty toward the cast of Snowpiercer for not all being cast in the TV show of Shadowhunters. It is, however, your decision!

Despite this one fan’s plea of having Jamie Campbell Bower in the role again, I have to say that Sherwood’s casting has been met more positively than Campbell Bower’s, and as much as I enjoyed JCB’s part in the movie, like many of the fans, I’m really excited to see Dominic’s portrayal of the brooding hotness that is Jace.

I do, however, find it funny that Cassie would use the Snowpiercer cast as a replacement.  But I suppose that’s why she did so in the first place.

As for the Clary candidates, just remember that the person cast may not have naturally red hair, either, and that we can only hope that McG and gang pick the right girl (with the best chemistry read with Dom) for the role.
