In the GoT cover story, Emmy-winning writer-producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss explained what they hope this series finale will bring.
“We want people to love it. It matters a lot to us […] I’m hoping for the Breaking Bad [finale] argument where it’s like, ‘Is that an A or an A+?’
Dan Weiss
From the beginning we’ve talked about how the show would end. A good story isn’t a good story if you have a bad ending. Of course we worry.
David Benioff
As for directing the finale themselves, the reason was actually quite simple. The pair just spent too much time obsessing over every detail of the episode to leave the directing duties to another person. Spoiler: they’ve known their ending since season 3.
When something has been sitting with you for so long, you have such a specific sense of the way each moment should play and feel […] We’d be lurking over their shoulder every take driving them crazy making it hard for them to do their job. If we’re going to drive anybody crazy it might as well be ourselves.”
Dan Weiss
He’s not wrong. If you want something done the way you want it done, you better just get up and do it yourself.
Readers have the option of either ordering any or all of these cover variations online now or heading to a nearby magazine stand to pickup a copy on Friday.
