We give our thoughts on the YA adaptation of DUMPLIN’, based on the book of the same name and written by Julie Murphy.
Our 12th podcast episode explores the Netflix movie adaptation of Dumplin’. This story centers on Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald, Patti Cake$), who decides to enter a beauty pageant as a way to memorialize her recently deceased aunt, as well as start a revolution to show the community that girls like her deserve recognition as much as the standard contestants, despite the disapproval of her former beauty queen mom, Rosie (Jennifer Aniston, NBC’s Friends).
With the help of her best friend Ellen (Odeya Rush, The Giver), she signs up. She also finds herself befriending a couple of other unlikely contestants, Millie (Maddie Baillio, NBC’s Hairspray Live!) and Hannah (Bex Taylor-Klaus, MTV’s Scream: The TV Series), and finding romance with her crush co-worker Bo (Luke Benward, Life of the Party). But her confidence is waning and things don’t go as planned for her revolution.
Kait moderates with Nat and Ellie on board for this discussion.
Warning: Major spoilers will be discussed, so we recommend you see the movie if you haven’t already before you listen in.
