First STAR WARS Standalone Will Be Called ROGUE ONE, EPISODE VIII Release Date

ROGUE ONE will be the first standalone film in the STAR WARS franchise.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced major news for the STAR WARS franchise this morning!

First came news on the STAR WARS standalone film. The movie, written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards, will be called ROGUE ONE. Iger also confirmed the long-standing rumor that Felicity Jones (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) will star in the spin-off despite additional commitments to Tom Hanks’ ANGELS AND DEMONS. The film will be released on December 16, 2016.

The studio also confirmed that Rian Johnson, best known for the sci-fi thriller LOOPER, will write and direct STAR WARS EPISODE VIII. The sequel to THE FORCE AWAKENS finally has a release date: May 26, 2017.

The STAR WARS franchise is set to produce Episode IV, as well as at least one more spin-off.
