It’s official. House of the Dragon is coming to HBO Max. After the surprising pass on another potential Game of Thrones prequel led by Naomi Watts, HBO has now released our first look into the newest GoT prequel.

Along with this new trailer, HBO also released a ‘Prequel News & Information’ video with some, well, news about the show.

Co-created by George RR Martin and Ryan Condal, this prequel will follow our favorite family of dragonlords – House Targaryen. We’ll start with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and follow generations of Targaryens as they fight to hold onto that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

In this show, we’ll find out:

  • What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons?
  • Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom?
  • What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes?
  • What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies?

Readers of the series have already had small glimpses into this story through The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, we’ll get to see the full tapestry of Targaryen history.

Miguel Sapochnik will partner with Condal as showrunner and direct the pilot and additional episodes.

As it was with the original franchise, the future of this prequel is currently unknown with over 700 pages to draw inspiration from. What we do know however is that HBO has already ordered ten episodes at ~$30 million each. Filming will start in January and “the show will focus on a period that leads up to and includes the Targaryen Civil War.”

So my friends, it’s time to buckle up. The Dawn of the Dragons is near.
