Mantis is revealed in latest concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, along with a couple of other familiar faces.
Director James Gunn was excited to finally give us a look of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with this very fiery concept art. Artist Andy Park did an amazing job detailing the looks of each character, and we’re thrilled to see Baby Groot as well as new addition Mantis.
A couple of the familiar faces added, but that were originally foes for the Guardians, are blue-skinned Nebula and Yondu. Karen Gillan plays the hot-tempered Nebula, who was raised alongside Gamora by Thanos. Michael Rooker plays Yondu, who also played a sort of fatherly role to Peter Quill. In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, both were not so friendly to the group, but alliances have changed in this one.
The introduction of Mantis is probably the coolest part as this is a completely new character to the film. Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) will be playing the character, whom executive producer Jonathan Schwartz describes below:
“She has never really experienced social interaction. Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”
From the description, it sounds like there’ll be some really hilarious interaction between Mantis and the rest of the crew.
As for Baby Groot, Schwartz teases us about which kind of characteristics he will take:
“He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”
If you want more information about this piece of concept art, James Gunn did host a live Facebook Q&A with fans. Although his internet cut him off 4 times before he called it quits, he was able to answer some questions.
More news about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will come out during the Marvel panel next Saturday, July 23rd, at San Diego Comic-Con. Stay tuned for that.
