STARGIRL prepares for the movie spotlight with Grace VanderWaal in the leading role!
America’s Got Talent favorite Grace VanderWaal is headed to film in Disney’s adaptation of Jerry Spinelli‘s Stargirl!
A “celebration of nonconformity,” Stargirl follows a teenager who starts sophomore year at her local high school after years of being homeschooled. With a bright personality and ukulele in hand, Stargirl’s eccentric habits are admired by everyone, including shy Leo Borlock. But soon, Leo notices the vicious tide of popularity turning against Stargirl and has to decide between keeping his head down and being his true self alongside the unapologetic girl he’s fallen for.
“I knew [Grace] was Stargirl almost immediately,” director Julia Hart told Deadline, who broke the news. “The world knows what a talented performer she is, and I cannot wait for everyone to see just how many sides there are to this special and magical young woman.”
Stargirl will be an original movie featured on Disney’s still named upcoming streaming service, the first of four to five original films the service plans to release each year. The channel will also feature most of Disney’s filmography, including Star Wars and Marvel movies, and original television shows, including a new live-action Star Wars series. The creation of the channel has lead to some serious contention with Netflix, who currently hosts Disney’s streaming content.
