Hamilton Director Teams with Ice Cube for Disney Musical OLIVER TWIST

Ice Cube to help write the updated modern version of the musical OLIVER TWIST and is set to star as Fagin.

On the heels of the success of Hamilton: The Musical, Disney will be making their own modern musical, this one based off the Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist as well as the stage musical adaptation of it, Oliver! And who better to help the project along than Hamilton director Thomas Kail.

Not only that, but other notables will be involved with this treatment, including movie producer Marc Platt, who was involved with the musical Wicked, and Ice Cube, who will be co-writing the production with The Firm’s Jeff Kwatinetz. Ice Cube is also signed on to play the notorious leader of the gang of young pickpocketers.

As what can be expected, especially with a former co-founder of influential rap group N.W.A. involved in the project, elements of various types of music, including hip hop, will be implemented. But this shouldn’t be a surprise considering the people involved and the popularity of Hamilton.

As awesome and revolutionary as Hamilton is, I’m wary of reimagining an already successful and established, although dated, stage musical. But I’m also one to not outright shoot down a remake. I’m always willing to give a benefit of a doubt.

What about you? What do you think of an updated modern musical version of Oliver Twist?
