You may familiar with the professional stage adaptation of the His Dark Materials trilogy put together by Nick Hearn that first premiered in 2003, but do you know that the play is now being performed by theater groups quite often?
In an article in The Berwick Advertiser, the director of one such group discusses the challenges of putting on a play based on a story with such complex ideas and settings:
“The plot is set in so many different worlds that I have to try and thing of different ways of doing things; it would be impossible to set all of the action on stage!
“I’m going to use some video and lighting effects to try and create the different atmospheres and I’ve also toyed with an ‘advent calendar’ way of doing things.
“I think the biggest challenge facing the show is that it’s not a musical so it can’t rely on the fact that people will know the songs from it and although I’ve tried to inject a bit of humour where I can it’s not a particularly funny piece.
Would you go to see the His Dark Materials stage production, or even try to put on a production of your own?
