New cast members for Season 2 of HIS DARK MATERIALS

The cast and executive producers of HBO’s His Dark Materials grouped up for a virtual panel for this year’s pandemic-themed SDCC at Home.

In the panel were actors Dafne Keen (Lyra), Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter), Ariyon Bakare (Lord Boreal), Amir Wilson (Will Parry), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby), and one of the new cast members for season 2, Andrew Scott (John Parry), along with executive producers Jane Tranter and Jack Thorne.

Stacey Wilson Hunt moderated the panel and it was fun to see them and listen to them talk about this pretty awesome adaptation. You can watch the panel below.

From the panel, we also learned that Andrew Scott’s character, John Parry, will have a dæmon voiced by Fleabag co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. If the adaptation continues to follow closely to the Pullman’s books, the dæmon will be an osprey (sorry Fleabag fans who were hoping for something more fox-like.)

Other HDM casting news was released and we now know that Terence Stamp (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Jade Anouka (Turn Up Charlie), and Simon Kirby (Artemis Fowl) have also been cast for season 2, which will be based on the second book of the novel series, The Subtle Knife. They will be playing Giacomo Paradisi, Ruta Skadi, and Dr. Mary Malone, respectively.

For those wondering about James McAvoy and if he’ll be reprising his role in season 2 as Lord Asriel, they actually had plans for Asriel to have a standalone episode that was approved by Pullman to shoot since Asriel doesn’t really have a significant role in book 2. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the idea had to be scrapped, at least for the time being, and it may be something they could figure into in the future, though we’re not sure how.

Anyway, with all of what’s going on, it looks like season 2 of His Dark Materials is still on schedule for the Fall on HBO Max, where season 1 is now available.
