Elizabeth Banks recently spoke to MSN Movies about her various movie projects including The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and working with Girl Scouts of the USA.
When your “Hunger Games” fans found out I was going to be chatting with you today, they sent me a bunch of questions they wanted me to ask you. Natasha wants to know how you prepared for the role of Effie Trinket and what your favorite part is of playing her.
My favorite part of playing her is the voice. I love talking like Effie, and that’s also one of the things I focused on the most in my preparation. I knew the hair and the makeup and the clothes were all going to kind of take care of themselves … but the voice was pretty much up to me in terms of what I wanted her to sound like. I did a lot of research. I tested a lot of voices. I made a lot of tapes of myself talking like different ways that I thought Effie might speak. I’m really happy with the way that voice came out.
This is a question from Martha: Was there part of Effie’s wardrobe that you wanted to keep and take home with you?
I really wanted to keep these gold Alexander McQueen shoes. I’m happy to report that I didn’t get those exact ones, but Alexander McQueen very sweetly sent me black ones that are very similar.
There have been several casting announcements for “Catching Fire.” Have you been keeping track of who’s been cast so far, and what do you think?
Yes, I am, and I’m really excited to see who they keep getting. The casting has been amazing. The casting process has yielded an incredible cast starting with Jennifer [Lawrence] and Liam [Hemsworth] and Josh [Hutcherson] and then Woody [Harrelson], myself and Lenny [Kravitz]. I just feel like the cast is incredible, and now of course we have Philip Seymour Hoffman and all these other young great tributes. Jena Malone will be fantastic. So it’s a great process that has yielded an incredible group of people.
Have you met with the new director, Francis Lawrence, about the direction he wants to take the sequel?
I have met with him and we did talk about the sequel “Catching Fire” and what his plans are. It was a really exciting conversation. I’ve already been to some fittings, so I’ve already seen some of Effie’s new wardrobe, and all I can say is, “Wow, wow, wow!” The wow factor is getting amped up.
Tiffany wants to know: When do you report to the set to start shooting, and do you know where the shooting location will be?
I don’t know exactly where we’ll be filming, but we’ll be shooting the second movie in Georgia and Hawaii. We start filming in September.
