Issa Rae is the latest to join the cast of the Black Lives Matter-inspired drama THE HATE U GIVE.
HBO’s Insecure creator and star Issa Rae has signed on to join the cast of The Hate U Give, the movie adaptation of Angie Thomas’ best-seller inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
The movie stars Amandla Stenberg as the teen eyewitness of the of a police officer and her best friend, who was unarmed. For her, the situation isn’t so easy to deal with as she has to juggle life between her poverty-stricken neighborhood and the suburban prep school she’s able to attend.
Rae will play April, the activist that helps Stenberg’s character, Starr, to have the courage to speak up.
The Hate U Give was picked up by Fox 2000, Temple Hill, and State Street in a competitive bidding war. George Tillman, Jr. is set to direct the drama, which also stars Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, and other recent cast member Common.
