James Gunn has been teasing fans on Facebook about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and in his recent Q&A session, hinted at the possibility of a character debut in the next Avengers movie, as well.
The follow up to the Marvel’s 2014 hint would have “something a little bit in the vein of the first movie and also different,” according to Gunn. Since the first movie ended with Groot’s rebirth, fans should expect a younger smaller Groot, and that isn’t necessarily something all his teammates will like. “Drax is not the biggest fan of Baby Groot,” he revealed.
With all the speculation on who or how many new characters there are, Gunn also revealed that there will be at least one new character, but he (or she) won’t be human. “There will be no other humans — humans being earthlings — besides [Chris Pratt’s character] Quill,” Gunn clarified.
On the idea of a possible a Guardians and Avengers team-up, Gunn was dismissive. “My interest is to tell stories that are deeper and better about the characters that we’ve already known. Even though I am adding characters — one character, at least, in [Vol. 2], it really is about getting to know the characters better. It isn’t about mixing and matching characters. That’s kind of boring to me, actually.”
Gunn named Adam Warlock – an artificially created human with godlike powers who is often connected with the Guardians – his favorite character, and was asked if he would appear in a future Guardians movie. The answer was unexpected – “You guys gotta wait and see,” he said. “But, you know, you can’t — everything’s going to be different in the Infinity Wars.” As Adam Warlock is the comic book hero most closely connected with Avengers: Infinity War villain Thanos, is this a clue that Warlock might be in the third and fourth Avengers movies?
Here is the full Q&A. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently in pre-production and scheduled for a May 2017 release.
