Jeffrey Dean Morgan knew who Negan was and accepted the role immediately
Jeffrey Dean Morgan has had some pretty memorable TV roles, including playing papa Winchester to Sam and Dean on Supernatural, and as the man who broke hearts everywhere as the love of Izzy’s life Denny Duquette in Grey’s Anatomy, which was basically the only reason I watched that show.
But at the recent Supernatural PasCon (yes, he still stops by a SPN convention every once in a while, because Supernatural) in Pasadena, CA, he spoke about nabbing the role of the biggest mofo baddie in The Walking Dead, Negan, which was officially announced recently:
“It’s a whoooooole different ballgame. Y’all know about Negan?” he said as the crowd went wild. “Me too. It’s why I did it.”
He continues on about how his agent/manager called him about it, and how he knew what part it was for before they even told him the character’s name:
“When my agent/manager called they said, ‘You’ve been offered this thing on The Walking Dead…it’s to play a big bad.’ At the time, they didn’t know the character’s name, because I think it was supposed to be a secret. And I’m like, ‘Is it f–king Negan?’ And they’re like, ‘I don’t know, we’re going to have to call you back, hold on a second.’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’s f–king Negan. And I’m f–king doing it.'”
He does acknowledge that many people know of him playing characters that are a little rough on the edges, but have a heart of gold (although that’s not always the case, but remember, he played Denny Duquette,) but the challenge with playing Negan is to show there’s something more to him than just the bad:
“I think the challenge for me in this role is going to be, is there any heart in Negan? And for me, I look at this challenge as an actor and that’s the kind of thing that I embrace and really look forward to, so… I’m super excited about it. It’s going to be cool. I hope y’all tune in and watch, and I promise you it’ll be something different than you’ve seen me do.”
You can watch the video of him answering that question below:
For those looking forward to the introduction of Negan, according to E!Online, that won’t happen until the season six finale, that’s scheduled to be on April 3, 2016. The Walking Dead is currently in it’s mid-season break, so we have a while before the finale.
If you’ve read the graphic novels the show is based on, that can also mean a certain deathly fate for one of the major characters, but that’s still something that’s not confirmed and probably won’t be confirmed. As you know, some characters that are alive in the novels are no longer living on the series, and vice versa. So, you’ll just have to stay tuned to see. Either way, whether Negan showing up with his bat Lucille to bash a head in as a way of saying hello, we’re sure to see a side of Jeffrey Dean Morgan that’s going to be insane.
And for me, being a fan of Jeffrey Dean Morgan since Supernatural, seeing him as Negan will be torture. I think he’s excellent for the part, but I’ve got no love for Negan.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was recently seen on the now-cancelled series Extant, but you can see him currently on The Good Wife. You’ll also be able to see him on the big screen in March as Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas Wayne, in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
