The LOOKING FOR ALASKA movie is probably not happening after all.
We all thought it was finally happening this time, but it looks like the Looking For Alaska movie, based off John Green’s beloved debut novel, may not be happening after all.
Green shared his frustration in the latest vlogbrothers video, in which he says “Ugh! I don’t know. Maybe never?” when asked when the Looking For Alaska movie is coming out. “They’ve tried to make a movie a bunch of times but it’s always fallen apart for one reason or another. At this point I’m not involved in the project in any way.”
Looking for Alaska was originally optioned for film just after the book’s publication, but never came to fruition. In 2014, Sarah Polley was hired to write and direct the film, but in 2015, it was announced that Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber would take over the script with Rebecca Thomas directing.
In September, The Wrap reported that the film’s fall production date was pushed back because the studio and director were unable to come to an agreement as to who should play the pivotal role of Alaska. There were rumors of other casting, but the delay may have caused many supporting actors to drop out due to other commitments. From there, it looks like things has gone seriously downhill.
As a massive John Green fan who would argue that Looking for Alaska is the author’s best, this is quite the bummer. But we’ll always have the book, right?
