DC Comics’ favorite in development for the big screen thanks to Joss Whedon!
After a messy ending to his time with Marvel, Joss Whedon is looking to turn to the DC Extended Universe.
Variety reports that Whedon is nearing a deal to direct a Batgirl standalone film for Warner Bros, giving one of the most popular comic characters in the DC universe her own film for the first time.
Batgirl entered the DC Comics universe in 1967 and is mostly popularly Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, the head of the Gotham Police Department. There’s no word yet on which comic storyline Whedon might use for the film.
Besides popular credits like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly, Joss Whedon credits are pretty Marvel-centric with the first two Avengers films and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..
A Batgirl film likely wouldn’t hit until at least 2021, as Warner Bros has a very full DC line-up in the works including this year’s Wonder Woman and Justice League, as well as Gotham City Sirens, The Batman, The Flash, Cyborg, Shazam, and a sequel to Suicide Squad.
