Juliette Lewis is added to the cast of ANTHEM, based on the book Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet by Joanne Proulx.

Joanna Proulx’s 2007 YA novel Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet is being turned into a movie through Sepia Films, and Juliette Lewis was announced as playing the mother to the main character, played by the wonderfully talented Cameron Monaghan (Fox’s Gotham). The movie also stars actress Peyton List (Bunk’d).

Anthem is “described as The Perks of Being a Wallflower meets American Beauty, is an adaptation of Joanne Proulx’s novel about Luke Hunter (Monaghan), who foresees the death of his new best friend, Stan, the most popular guy in school. When the premonition becomes reality, Luke is ostracized and labeled a freak, while at the same time he’s falling for Stan’s girl, Faith (List), and dealing with more premonitions.”

Lewis’s character will be “Mary Hunter, an intuitive mother whose wisdom, grace and humor helps her teenage son navigate the unique challenges of his world.”

No doubt, it sounds like a role suited for Lewis.

Here’s the synopsis:

Luke Hunter is a small-town teenager who splits his time between his cynical “druggie” friends (including his childhood best friend Fang and his nemesis Dwight) and his new friend Stan, a popular scholar-athlete with a passion for life and a girlfriend – Faith – that every boy in town wants.

One day, during a pot-smoking session, Luke has a premonition that Stan will be struck by a car and killed. Everyone laughs it off – until the next morning, when Stan dies exactly as Luke predicted, down to the car’s license plate number. Dwight sells a video of Luke’s premonition to a local news station and his friends line up to be interviewed. Luke is dubbed “The Prophet of Death” by a local reporter who harasses him daily.

Meanwhile, Luke continues to foresee the deaths of people around him – first a convenience store clerk, then his neighbour Mr. Bernoffski. Luke lashes out at the world and gets suspended from school, but also strengthens his bond with Faith: he’s clearly falling for her, which adds intense guilt to his swirling mix of emotions. Then Luke sees one more premonition: the death of his best friend – Fang.

To save his friend, Luke must reject the darkness that surrounds him and become a force for good.

Anthem is being directed by Robin Hays in her first feature film directorial debut, and is currently in production. The movie is scheduled to be released in 2018.
