Adult Henry is a daunting role for an actor to take over on ONCE UPON A TIME, but according to his on-screen mother, Andrew J. West is a perfect fit.
After six seasons of Jared Gilmore as Young Henry on Once Upon a Time, it’s time for Adult Henry to take center stage. Andrew West acknowledges that he’s basing much of his acting on Gilmore (and his relationships with Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison).
I really wanted to take a lot of inspiration from the dynamic of the relationship between Emma and Henry, and Regina and Henry – really let those dynamics inspire what I was doing. That’s essentially where this person came from, you know? That’s what molded him into the person that he is.
West also acknowledges the unique difficulty of taking over an already-established character, but he states that “enough time has passed. He’s changed in some really fundamental ways, so we can play with who this person has become.”
Parrilla is thrilled with West’s casting as Adult Henry. She sees a lot of similarities between Gilmore and West. She explains,
I was telling Andrew after our panel, I said, ‘I had a moment with you.’ He didn’t even know it, but I looked at him and all of a sudden I saw Jared. They kind of resemble, but he actually does things and says things exactly the way Jared would. It’s really bizarre. For a moment I just thought, ‘Oh my God, I can absolutely see this man being my son – even though we’re seven years apart.’
The pair have been working together to find their groove as mother and son. Parrilla made an interesting request during the process:
I said, ‘I hope you’re comfortable with me touching your face and doing things that I used to do with Jared because I’ve known Jared since he was ten years old. Jared is like my boy.’ Andrew was very open to it. He was like, ‘Do whatever you need to do to recreate that relationship with me.’
