Another Marvel comic is coming to television, this time for young adults!
Disney is taking Marvel television to a new corner of its empire with a newly announced series order for Cloak and Dagger!
According to Variety, the Disney-owned Freeform channel has approved Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger for a straight-to-series order, which would be 13 episodes. The station is geared to audiences 14-34, making this Marvel’s first live-action adaptation geared specifically at young adult audiences.
The show will follow comic book duo Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson aka Cloak and Dagger, two teen runaways turned super-powered beings who team up to fight crime (and have an awfully steamy romance) in New York City. On top of their own adventures, the two have been featured in X-Men and Spiderman comics.
The live-action interracial romance follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.
Disney currently has two Marvel series on their major broadcast network, ABC– Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter— and they’re developing a third, Marvel’s Most Wanted.
Production for the series is still in the very early stages and a writer has not been hired. Though they don’t specifically confirm it, Variety suggests that the show will be paired with the second season of its new hit fantasy, Shadowhunters.
