Meet THE BFG Himself In New Featurette With Mark Rylance

Oscar winner Mark Rylance talks about playing Roald Dahl’s beloved gentle giant, The BFG!

Steven Spielberg’s THE BFG is set to bring Roald Dahl’s popular tale of a young orphan and a giant with a special friendship to life, but its success hinges greatly on one character: The Big Friendly Giant himself, portrayed by actor Mark Rylance.

The movie follows 10-year-old orphan Sophie (named after author Roald Dahl’s granddaughter) portrayed by newcomer Ruby Barnhill, who comes across a Big Friendly Giant– The BFG. He takes Sophie to Giant Country where he teaches the timid girl about dreams and magic, allowing them to form an incredible friendship. But not all of the giants in Giant Country are friendly. Most want to feast on human flesh! To stop them, Sophie and the giant head to London to warn Queen Elizabeth about the impending giant problem about to befall England.

In a new featurette, we’re getting up close and personal with The BFG and Giant Country alongside some commentary about the heart of the character from Steven Spielberg and Rylance, a frequent collaborator of the director’s in recent years who would an Academy Award this winter for his role in Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. The two also discuss the importance of the endearing friendship between The BFG and Sophie.

The BFG hits theaters on July 1, 2016.
