New Concept Art for Disney’s MOANA

Disney releases concept art for their latest animated film, Moana!

Disney’s dives into to the Pacific Island culture in Moana. Pacific Islanders had once been the greatest navigators of the Sea. 3000 years ago they traveled across the Pacific Ocean without the aid of nautical instruments. Then one day the voyages stopped and for a thousand years Pacific Islanders ended their migrations. Without explanation the voyages once again started up with voyages going farther than ever before populating the Eastern Pacific Islands. It has been a great mystery why this culture began exploring again. Disney takes on this tale with Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho), a young explorer and daughter of the island’s chief who teams up with demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). Together they rekindle the voyaging spirit of her culture. To keep the story true to the Pacific Island culture, filmmakers assembled a group of experts made up of anthropologists, archaeologists, linguists, historians, dancers, tattoo artists, and elders called their “Oceanic Story Trust.”

The images below are concept art and storyboards for Moana. They include character design for Moana and Maui as well as images of the island.

Moana hits theaters November 23, 2016.

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.  From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
