Chris Weitz, a former TWILIGHT director, will be a major part of the STAR WARS franchise!

He may not be in the director’s chair, but that certainly isn’t dampening Chris Weitz’ spirits regarding his work on the upcoming STAR WARS standalone. The director of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, ABOUT A BOY, and THE GOLDEN COMPASS has signed on to re-write the mysterious STAR WARS standalone movie that will be directed by GODZILLA helmer Gareth Edwards. The original draft was created by Gary Witta.

While promoting Disney’s CINDERELLA, for which he wrote the screenplay, Chris Weitz was quick to explain why STAR WARS became the major exception in his otherwise sci-fi free script writing resume:

I saw Star Wars when I was 7 and it was a formative experience in my life, let alone in the notion of filmmaking. I’m probably only working on this stuff because I did have that experience then. But it completely possessed me when I was a child and it was a huge part of my kind of emotional make up.

He said when it comes to the STAR WARS universe, there’s no limits as to what fans can expect:

“They need to expect everything because it’s Star Wars. They have to. If I don’t do that I’m failing in my job”.

The yet untitled STAR WARS standalone film is due out December 16, 2016.
