Newly Discovered Wasp Species Named After HARRY POTTER’s Dementors

A wasp that’s known to paralyze and then devour cockroaches has been aptly named, because it certainly sounds like the stuff of nightmares.

The Natural History Museum of Berlin let the public vote on the name of this creepy creature and the winner was Ampulex dementor after the famed soul-suckers from HARRY POTTER. Appropriate, since both creatures paralyze their prey and leave them in a zombie-like state. Though a book dementor may not kill its prey, in either case, the victim is never recovering!

The Ampulex dementor is native to Southeast Asia.
