NYCC 2019: RIVERDALE Roundtable with Skeet Ulrich

During New York Comic Con, we had the chance to attend the Riverdale press room where we interviewed several actors from the show, including the “parents” of our favorite characters.

While the kids may be the stars of the show, the parents aren’t without their own crazy star prowess. In fact, for those who don’t know, Jughead’s dad aka FP Jones is none other than Skeet Ulrich, an original Scream alum.

So since Hollywood is currently in a 90s reboot craze, we wanted to hear Ulrich’s reflections on his role in Scream vs his current one in Riverdale. Ulrich admits that no one working on Scream expected it to become as big as it did. In fact, according to Ulrich, Miramax actually wanted to pull the plug on the film. It took some quick thinking and hustle by Scream producers to convince the ‘big guys’ to keep the project going.

For us, we had no idea it would even be successful let alone last as long as it did and even become a franchise. It’s truly incredible.

As we delved into our interview, we learned that this season will really start peeling away the layers that make FP… well, FP. Ulrich says that FP is really not a family man and the 9-5 life. It’s just not for him. And when Jughead begins investigating his dad’s past, the father-son relationship starts to tear and FP is faced with some difficult decisions.

His other child though? Admittedly, Ulrich tells us that Jellybean isn’t really around much this season, though he promises that fans will see a lot more Archie and FP scenes.

I think it comes from FP’s desire to step in for Fred’s loss, and so I’ve been working a lot with KJ and that’s been great. I love the guy, so it’s been fun to get to do more with him.

Ulrich also tells us that there are a lot more “Falice” scenes this season as well, saying that things are really starting to sizzle between the two characters and he’s excited to see where that relationship goes.

You get to see what is it that’s making that [relationship] happen, and I don’t think you really got to see that before. Now you’re starting to see why they connect the way that they do.

One character that FP hasn’t yet interacted with but that Ulrich would love to do some scenes with is Cheryl. Ulrich believes that it would be really fun to see what would happen if the two strong will, opinionated characters met. Who knows, maybe Aguirre-Sacasa will write us a FP/Cheryl scene?

Riverdale is now airing on CW and the CW App Wednesdays 8/7c.
