Olivia Cookie will play dominant gamer girl Art3mis in READY PLAYER ONE!

It’s been quite the year for Olivia Cooke! After quieter roles in Bates Motel, Ouija, and The Quiet Ones in the past, the actress had a breakout year thanks to her performance in Sundance darling Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl. Now, she’s been cast in a pivotal role in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One, based on the novel by Ernest Cline!

In the year 2044, the global energy crisis has almost destroyed Earth. But rich or poor, everyone is distracting themselves in the spectacular virtual reality world called OASIS. When OASIS creator James Halliday passes away, he promises his $240 billion inheritance and total control of the OASIS system to the first person who can solve a series of riddles and prove that they truly understand his dedication. A number of treasure hunters aka “gunters”, including young Wade Watts, set out to solve Halliday’s puzzle… but the closer they come to success, the more the deadly threats come knocking at their door.

Cooke will play Art3mis, an infamous gamer in OASIS even before her journey as a gunter. The character is Wade Watt’s love interest, but she’s also his main competition and is in no way a damsel in distress. Her real life name is Samantha Cook, though there will be very little reference to that if the film follows the book closely.

Ready Player One is due to hit theaters on December 15, 2017.
