A classic Shakespeare character gets a fierce new twist in OPHELIA!
Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts are plotting in a new photo from the upcoming movie Ophelia, an adaptation Lisa Klein‘s YA novel of the same name, which takes on Shakespeare’s Hamlet from a very different viewpoint.
The still gives fans a first look at Ophelia and Queen Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother, the latter of whom takes the former in as both a protege and a “project” of sorts, according to Watts, who spoke about the film with Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s just a spark that reignites her. It’s almost like she wants to put her on a path that she’s not been able to reach herself. So she sort of befriends her, and it’s like a project in a way that she wishes she could recreate or reinvent herself.”
Ophelia, in both book and movie form, works in a new path for a one of Shakespeare’s most hapless and tragic characters by suggesting she’s much more clever and in control than the original story lets on.
“There’s real currency in the fact that Ophelia was the victim, and now she’s been recast as the hero,” Watts said. “If [a woman’s]mind is powerful, it must be madness. And now there’s this shift that’s taking place, and that’s reflected in this storytelling.”
Ophelia premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this month. You can check out Lisa Klein’s novel now via Amazon (the Kindle edition is currently only $1.88!)
