OUTLANDER Announces Delayed Season 3 Return

OUTLANDER’s “Droughtlander” is continuing until the fall.

Fans of the Outlander series have been (im)patiently awaiting news of the show’s Season 3 return for some time now. Season 1 and 2 both premiered in April, but with no announcements about premiere dates and the cast still filming, many people guessed Season 3 would be a summer release. It turns out that thought process was a little too optimistic.

Starz announced that Season 3 of the show will bow in September 2017.

In a statement via EW, Starz President of Programming Carmi Zlotnik explained there was a need for the later return:

“While Droughtlander will last just a little longer, we feel it is important to allow the production the time and number of episodes needed to tell the story of the Voyager book in its entirety. The scale of this book is immense, and we owe the fans the very best show. Returning in September will make that possible.”

A plot point in Season 3 required the production to make a move from Scotland to South Africa (which will stand in for another topical locale) for filming, which surely took up valuable production time.

Based on Diana Gabaldon‘s Voyager, Season 3 follows Claire and Jamie’s lives after they separate– Claire going back to through the stones to be with Frank and raise Brianna, Jamie going through hardships and prison following the Battle of Culloden. All the while, they hope to find their way back to each other.

The official day of release has not been announced yet, but new season has been confirmed for 13 episodes.
