Paul Reubens to play Penguin’s father in Fox’s Gotham series
It was announced this past weekend at New York Comic-Con that Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens will have a recurring role as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin’s father in the second season of Fox’s Gotham.
For those of you who remember, Paul Reubens actually played Penguin’s father previous to this, in the 1992 feature film Batman Returns, which starred Michael Keaton as the caped crusader and Danny De Vito as the Penguin. I don’t remember if he actually spoke in the movie, but he was basically in it for maybe a few minutes, if that. I’m pretty sure he’ll have at least a few things to say in the series.
The changes to this season are already an getting viewers more excited about the show, and with the addition of Michael Chiklis as the new Captain of Gotham City PD, he’s definitely not going to make it easy on Jim, but maybe it’s a good thing.
“He’s a real wallflower,” Chiklis teased. “Barnes comes in as a countermeasure to the villainy that is running amok to Gotham. He serves as a mentor to [Jim] and he’s trying to pull him out of the muck, because he’s sliding down that slippery slope of the ends justifying the means.”
As Jim (Ben McKenzie) struggles with his morality, his portrayer acknowledged that the shades of gray have been enjoyable. “He’s learned the lay of the land, and now he’s going to put that into action … what he’s learned is sometimes you have to play a little fast and loose with the rules,” McKenzie said. “Now he has a new boss, and his boss wants to kick ass.”
