Penguin Teen acquires David Yoon’s FRANKLY IN LOVE for 2019 publication

David Yoon, the husband of EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING author Nicola Yoon, has his own book coming out titled FRANKLY IN LOVE.

After having read Kelly Loy Gilbert’s Picture Us in the Light, we’re ready for more excellent diverse books with great in-depth characters of color. And from what we’ve heard, David Yoon’s debut novel, Frankly in Love, will be one of those books.

David Yoon is the husband of bestselling author Nicola Yoon. He also was the illustrator for Nicola’s debut book Everything, Everything. Nicola’s books both have main characters as female and black, which has helped create a personal connection with many of her fans who are persons of color.

This time, we get another perspective, this time from a male Korean-American. The manuscript for the book was apparently so good that 10 publishing houses were bidding for it. But Penguin came out on top, with G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers tasked with publishing it.

The book is about a young Korean-American struggling to find a happy medium between his parents’ traditional ways and Southern California way of life he grew up in.

“It’s been a dream of mine forever to write a book this close to my heart,” Yoon said in a statement. “And the fact that that book has now found a home with the incomparable Jen Klonsky and the rest of the family at Penguin means my dream has seriously come true in the best possible way. I freak out daily.”

Jen also had something to say about bringing on David and his book to the Penguin family.

“Frankly in Love is fresh, funny, romantic, and totally authentic,” says Jennifer Klonsky, who will edit the book. “It’s also surprising. David Yoon unapologetically takes on issues of identity and race, with a result that is challenging and entertaining. I can’t wait for everyone to read this incredible debut!”

Frankly in Love is scheduled to hit shelves in the fall of 2019.
