Philip Pullman Announces HIS DARK MATERIALS Companion Trilogy

Lyra and the world of HIS DARK MATERIALS will return in THE BOOK OF DUST!

After capturing the hearts of millions with the His Dark Materials trilogy, Philip Pullman says he’ll be returning to the universe with a new trilogy following Lyra Belacqua!

The trilogy will be called The Book of Dust and it comes 17 years after the release of the final His Dark Materials novel.

So where does the timeline for these new books fall? All over the place.

“People say, ‘Is it prequel? Is it a sequel?’ Well, it is neither,” Pullman told BBC. “It’s an ‘equel’. It’s a different story which begins roughly 10 years before His Dark Materials and ends roughly 10 years after.”

That means we’ll be seeing Lyra from infancy until age 20. There better be a reunion between Lyra and Will or we riot!

Pullman isn’t revealing the plot details, but confirms that the book doesn’t shy away from political themes.

“At the centre of The Book Of Dust is the struggle between a despotic and totalitarian organisation, which wants to stifle speculation and inquiry, and those who believe thought and speech should be free.”

Though a cover and official title have yet to be revealed, the first book in the series has a release date: October 19, 2017.

You can pre-order the book via Amazon now.

Pullman’s His Dark Materials books– Northern Lights (UK)/ The Golden Compass (US), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass— are critically-acclaimed bestsellers and sparked a 2004 National Theatre adaptation and a 2007 film (which was broiled in controversy as the studio tried to cut some religious themes) starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
