PRETTY LITTLE LIARS will finish up with season 7!
After many rumours and much speculation, it has now been confirmed that this season will be the final one for Freeform’s hit show, Pretty Little Liars.
The news was announced today during a Facebook Live Interview with showrunner I. Marlene King, and all five of the ‘liars’: Troian Bellisario (Spencer Hastings), Ashley Benson (Hanna Marin), Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery), Shay Mitchell (Emily Fields), and Sasha Pieterse (Alison DiLaurentis). The final 10 episodes of season 7 will air next April, and finish with a two hour series finale directed by King herself. These final episodes will include one directed by Bellisario, titled “In the Eye Abides the Heart.”
PLL’s final season will continue its trend of bringing back old characters and storylines in the back-half of the season, with Julian Morris (Wren Kingston), Edward Kerr (Pastor Ted Wilson), and Chloe Bridges (Sydney Driscoll) set to return. It has also been hinted that a #PLLWedding will be in store for one of our characters during the second half of the season.
When talking about the show, executive vice president of programming at Freeform, Karey Burke, said that the show has been a leader in social media interaction:
“Through brilliant storytelling, compelling characters and social media phenomena, ‘Pretty Little Liars’ paved the way for television shows, writers and cast to interact and engage with audiences on a national and global scale like never before, which led the series to unparalleled success.”
Executive producer I. Marlene King, who is heading up new drama Famous in Love starring Bella Thorne, talked more about the emotional side of finishing up the show, and her hope that fans will be satisfied:
“It’s been an honor to work with such a talented cast and crew over the last seven years. We are a family, and it will be hard to say goodbye to a show that has made such an impact on young audiences and been a mouthpiece for cultural change. I’m excited for fans to finally have all of their questions answered, and I believe they will be satisfied with the wild ride that is our last ten episodes. I am also thrilled to embark on my next endeavor ‘Famous In Love’ with Bella Thorne and for PLL fans to get wrapped up in Paige’s rise to stardom and the pitfalls of Hollywood.”
Pretty Little Liars, based on the novels by Sara Shepard, follows four friends who, after their friend Alison’s disappearance, start to receive ominous and threatening text messages. Desperate for answers, the four liars try to solve both Alison’s disappearance and the mystery identity of the elusive ‘A’ who is threatening their lives, finding out secrets about themselves and the people that surround them along the way.
As a longtime PLL fan, I am both happy and sad that the show will be coming to a close. Though I will miss watching and theorizing every week, I am very excited to finally get answers to all of the show’s mysteries, and I can only hope that all of our ‘liars’ will make it out of this mess alive.
The summer finale of Pretty Little Liars premieres tomorrow night, August 30th, on Freeform.
