ELEANOR AND PARK author Rainbow Rowell is heading to the world of comics!

In a new venture announced at BookCon, Rainbow Rowell will be teaming up with artist Kris Anka for a new Runaways series for Marvel comics.

“When [editor Nick Lowe] first reached out to me a few years ago about maybe working for Marvel, it was the first thing I asked him about,” the author told EW. “I was really excited because I always felt like there were more Runaway stories and that book should just have kept going.”

Runaways follows a group of teens who reluctantly take off in their own (with their telepathic pet dinosaur!) after discovering their parents are actually part of a villainous organization known as The Pride. The comic’s last run was in 2004, after which the surviving characters moved on to other Marvel series. Rowell and Anka’s series will reunite most of the group– Alex Wilder is too caught up in the Iron Fist universe for a proper return.

Rowell briefly talked about what the first new run will look like:

“At the beginning of this series they are scattered to the four winds and half of them are dead. One of the challenges now is who are they when they’re apart? They got thrown together, but now they’ve been pulled apart. They’re trying to figure out who they really are without each other… This arc is very much about them choosing to be together.”

Entertainment Weekly also released the first cover and some great character teasers with the announcement.

Rainbow Rowell’s Runaways comic series will debut in September. A Hulu series based on the comics is also set to hit screens sometime in 2018.
