Cassandra Clare reveals RED SCROLLS OF MAGIC book cover

We now have a cover for Cassandra Clare’s first Malec book, RED SCROLLS OF MAGIC, which starts the Magnus and Alec  The Eldest Curses Trilogy.

Fans of Cassandra Clare‘s The Shadowhunter Chronicles books have probably been waiting excited for more news on The Eldest Curses Trilogy, even though she’s been pretty busy with her current Shadowhunters series, The Dark Artifices, with the final book, Queen of Air and Darkness, being published this winter, and her next trilogy, The Last Hours, starting its run with Chain of Gold in 2019. Plus, there’s the non-Shadowhunters series she’s co-writing with Holly Black!

Not only that, but she’s currently involved in the novella anthology Ghosts of the Shadow Market, which focuses on various characters that appeared in or will appear in one of her main series’, but also featured James “Jem” Carstairs from The Infernal Devices Trilogy as a Silent Brother (mostly) in each story. This woman is magic!

Luckily, Clare did find the time to release the cover, and explains a little more about what to expect in this first book.

First of all, we can’t wait to get our hands on this story! A canon Magnus and Alec novel, and we are so glad that Cassie made time out of her crazily busy schedule to write it:

The Red Scrolls of Magic is a project very close to my heart. An essential part of the Mortal Instruments series is the love between Alec and Magnus, a reserved demon-hunter and a freewheeling warlock. I carved out a space for their first romantic vacation through Europe halfway through [Mortal Instruments] and always hoped I’d get a chance to revisit it. They went on that holiday having just gotten together, and return committed to living and dying for each other, so I knew something big had happened! This book is a first chance for fans of ‘Malec’ to see them not as part of an ensemble, but taking center stage. And it’s my chance to explore the development of both the characters and their relationship — their flaws and their triumphs.”

Here’s what she teased about the first book:

“Wes Chu and I ultimately mean for Red Scrolls of Magic to be a joyful book — it’s a classic romantic-comedy caper, along the lines of the movies CharadeRoman Holiday, or The Thomas Crowne Affair, of people falling wildly in love while having a riotous time hurtling through Europe,” she reveals. “Alec’s trying to negotiate first love, while Magnus is horrified that a dark secret from his past is casting a shadow over the future he’s hoping for with the guy he’s not sure he can keep. Magnus and Alec are going to get abducted aboard the Orient Express, meet grumpy vampires in Venice, and have true love tested where all roads lead. Fans will also get to check in with favorites like Clary and Jace, Isabelle and Simon, and Helen and Aline, but make no mistake — Magnus and Alec are the stars of this show!”

Wesley Chu, who is the co-writer for this series, is a science fiction/fantasy author whose works include the Tao Trilogy and The Time Salvager Trilogy. This is his first collaboration with Cassandra Clare.

Red Scrolls of Magic is set for publication on April 2, 2019, and you can pre-order below.
