Book Review + Giveaway: STRANGER THAN FANFICTION by Chris Colfer

STRANGER THAN FANFICTION is a story about friendship that exceeds expectations. Enter to win it for yourself!

Writing this minutes after finishing the book, I can definitely say Stranger Than Fanfiction exceeded my expectations. After reading the initial chapters, I made assumptions about the plot and characters of the book only to be completely shocked and impressed with how each turned out.

The story follows a group of friends, Sam, Mo, Topher and Joey, fresh out of high school and going on summer cross-country road trip. They jokingly invite one of their idols, actor Cash Carter along for the ride, only to have him to accept their offer. The next week, they experience unforgettable memories and learn more about themselves and their friends than they knew before.

Upon reading the first chapter, I created an image in my head of how I predicted the story would unfold. It couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Sam, Mo, Topher and Joey, all best friends, started out like most characters in books: Painfully 2D. Chris Colfer manages to introduce their depth and I was imminently impressed with the phenomenal character development throughout the book. Cash Carter, the Wiz Kids star, exists as the stereotypical child star turned bad in the beginning. He is the main element of the plot twist at the end of the book, which I will discuss later. I felt like I knew the quirks and flaws of all the characters by the end of the book, despite them being two dimensional at first.

As the story in the novel is based during a road trip, the backdrop and landscape, which changed daily, was very symbolic of the message in the story and was symbolic in regards to the characters own stories.

Colfer’s style of writing is one I am not unfamiliar with. Despite not being incredibly advanced when it comes to vocabulary, I was still engaged with the plot and characters all through the story. The easy-to-read language is suitable for all types of readers and as I previously mentioned, still manages to attract and engage the reader.

The various social issues and themes that were present in the book were masterfully addressed, in my opinion. The book can act as a solace for those experiencing the sensitive topics the book covers, and gives awareness to those who don’t. Acceptance was a huge theme in this novel and was multi-present in the plots and sub-plots of the book.

The ending of the book was the cherry on top for me. It may not be well-liked by all readers, but overall was an incredible plot twist and tied the whole story together seamlessly.

Stranger Than Fanfiction is a well-crafted byproduct of seamless storytelling and plot development. I enjoyed reading the novel and I also enjoyed being surprised by it.
