Revisiting Marvel’s unusual Star Wars comic adaptations

We’re all used to comic book heroes like Batman, Superman and Spider-Man making their way to the big screen, but some of our favourite movies have been transferred to the pages of our comic books too.

One of the most fascinating examples of this is when Marvel decided to make comic books out of the Star Wars movies. Whilst some of these have been fairly true to the movies, it’s where they sometimes do things a little differently that it really gets interesting.

The best example of this is the Marvel Star Wars comic book that came out at the time of the original movie in 1977.

Apparently George Lucas had contacted the comic book company ahead of the movie’s release as he wasn’t sure how much of a success the film would be. And the first comic book has some differences that would definitely be amusing for fans of the sci-fi franchise.

Not only is there a weirdly angular C-3PO and a curvy Star Destroyer spacecraft, but Luke Skywalker is older and bears an uncanny resemblance to a more rugged He-Man!

In addition to this, the first Star Wars comic from Marvel also includes deleted scenes from the movie with Luke’s encounter with Biggs Darklighter being a notable example.

Whilst it’s easy to laugh at some of artistic embellishments, it’s certainly a lot more interesting than the Star Wars: The Force Awakens comic that was recently released by Marvel. Whilst releasing a comic long after a movie’s premiere was never going to be exciting, there’s something weirdly flat about this that suggests that a little more imagination could have been used.

Maybe the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi will give Marvel something more to work with. Certainly the announcement that there’s a new casino planet called Canto Bight will give Marvel’s artist plenty of room for manoeuvre, and if Star Wars fans want to join in the fun then they can try some of the exciting casino slot games available at Royal Vegas Casino whilst waiting for the movie to be released on 15 December.

Although there is still plenty of debate over which was the best Marvel Star Wars comic, it’s clear that they all play a role in expanding the universe of this sci-fi franchise even further.

And with the announcement that there’s an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie in the works, it seems that there’s no shortage of Star Wars fun on the horizon.
